The Best Evening of the Summer, Hands Down

Alhamdulillah, I was fortunate to be at IIE tonight to participate in a truly amazing experience that made this evening the best evening of my summer so far, no question about it. Granted, that my summer has been pretty lousy as I was in exile for 3 months, but still… tonight was simply beautiful, and I can only be thankful to Him for allowing me to be there.

For those who may not know, IIE has graciously invited Qari Dr. Ahmed Nu`ayna of Egypt, a world renowned master recitor (qari) of the Qur’an to Chicago for the weekend. This is yet another proof for the greatness of Chicago for anyone out there who doubted this most sacred of truths–indeed, alhamdulillah, we are blessed. Anyway, to get an idea of who he is, think Qari Abdul Basit’s (may God have mercy on him) disciple… and the man’s a medical doctor(!) when he’s not bringing down the house with his beautiful recitation. As Mawlana Saleem (may Allah bless and preserve him) said tonight (translated from the Urdu), “Mashallah, he’s healing the bodies and the spirits with his work.” This guy has to be my new hero… Mashallah, may God bless him and preserve him (especially his voice!).

But tonight was something truly out of this world. The passion with which he recited, the emotion that was wrought on his face as his entire being recited the verse, and the flawless beauty that reverberated through that masjid hall as the Qur’an came from silence and returned to silence… what hopes do I have with mere words to capture the magnificence of tonight? Subhanallah, the way he recited the ruku from Surah Maryam (specifically, verses 12-36)… I felt as if I was actually part of that entire sequence–Jibril coming to Maryam; the pangs of childbirth; Allah providing her with food and drink; how she points to the child in the cradle when her people question her–and then, Subhanallah, the way he read “They said: ‘How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?’ He (`Isa [`alayhi al-salaam]) said: ‘I am the slave of God…” There wasn’t a dry eye in the entire audience. The coolest thing was towards the end when he started to bring in the different styles of recitation (Warsh, etc); however, even cooler (than the coolest, if such a thing exists, and pardon the grammatical error) was how he would make you think he’d stop at the ayah and then just bust out with another verse.

Enough of me talking. I just said that I’d have no hopes of using words to describe tonight, so I think the only thing left for me to do is to give the only thing that can help you understand tonight:

Please right-click and save as… it’s a huge file, please conserve bandwidth so that others can also listen to this.

Qari Dr. Ahmad Nu`ayna
Surah Maryam (vv. 12-36), Surah al-Duha, Surah al-Inshirah, Surah al-Tin, Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, Surah al-Nas, Surah al-Fatiha, and Surah al-Baqarah (vv. 1-2)
14.5 MB | 63:23 minutes
mp3 format

I really recommend downloading this, closing AIM and any other distractions, and just lie down on your bed with the speakers up (or head phones) to enjoy this… trust me, best 63 minutes you’ll invest this entire summer.

For those who are in Chicago (or are within driving distance and have nothing better to do this weekend), you can catch Dr. Nu`ayna at one of the following:

Friday, pre-Jumu’ah prayer recitation at Islamic Society of Northern Suburbs (Rolling Meadows) Masjid

Friday, 7:30 pm at Muslim Community Center (MCC)

Saturday, 7:30 pm at Masjid al-Huda (Schaumburg)

Sunday, 7:30 pm at Islamic Foundation (Villa Park)

Finally, the reason IIE is holding this weekend of festivities (which by the way is FREE WITH FOOD INCLUDED) is to generate funds for their many projects–specifically, the masjid project. Mawlana Saleem doesn’t believe in fundraising of any sort; he’s always content to let Allah provide whenever and from wherever He wills. However, I dare disagree with my shaykh for a minute and argue that for IIE to take it to the next level, they’re going to need some significant revenue to benefit the community even more. Alhamdulillah, it’s amazing what’s being done now on such a tight budget… I get giddy with excitement just thinking how much more could be done if sufficient funds were there. So please, be sure to check out these events and tell everyone you know… but also, even though you probably won’t hear a single announcement asking for funds, on the behalf of Mawlana Saleem and IIE, I urge you all to give as much as you can and help IIE take it to the next level.

  1. I agree with ur ideas about IIE…inshaAllah He will continue to give them the barakah that they are receiving and much much  more in the future…but we all have to pitch in because if we dont, Allah finds a way to do it without us…so its only to our benefit….

  2. Nu`ayna = hardcore. Molana Saleem = hardcore. Kr = tuttee

  4. The recitation is raw mA, no doubt.Unfortunately, that fact does not deter from your blatant and inexcusable misuse of the English language. First of all, it is “reciter” not “recitor.” Second, both “cooler” and “coolest” are grammatically correct.I caught these faults upon a mere first glance, so God Knows how many others are contained in this post.Observantly hating,IJB

  5. KR’s mp3 recorder = stud.

I have a feeling I wont be able to attend tonite or even tomorrow. I know it wont be the same, but atleast I have this long clip. Hope it’s up for a while. the new site change. I dont know for anyone else, but the dark blue text color is kind of straining w/ a black background. You also have to take in to consideration the glare that’s developed due to a black screen. I suggest the skyblue or white for text color.
